STUDIO VISITS is a collection of candid portraits of California artists curated from the files of photographer Jim McHugh. These images span more than three decades, from 1978 to the present. Jim McHugh is the pre-eminent portraitist of West Coast artists. Immediately apparent in his photographs is the great respect and exuberance he holds for his subjects and their work.

This insightful archive of historic images is an homage to the Los Angeles based artists who defined a new aesthetic, vision and creativity, completely independent of the New York School.

Jim McHugh’s collaboration with Henry Hopkins and Chronicle Press for "California Painters: New Work" and Abbeville Press for "The Art of Light and Space" offered singular views into the world of these artists.

STUDIO VISITS will be unveiled in two exhibitions. The first begins October 22, with the second opening in April 2012.

Art Historian Kristine McKenna, author of the award-winning book and documentary, The Cool School, the definitive work on Wallace Berman and has a long history as a noted Los Angeles Times writer, has generously contributed her talent and expertise to this body of work and to the selection of artists illustrated in the 80-page color catalog, Volume I, accompanying this first exhibition. With the exception of "Fire Road Above the Sunset Strip," the new pictures that will be shown at the LA ART SHOW have not been exhibited before. Quite by surprise, the selected images are all color. A mix of Colorado and Los Angeles. I ran across an interesting quote by Ansel Adams before while shooting in Colorado, " Landscape photography is the supreme test of the photographer, - and often the supreme disappointment. " I was very conscious of that while I was photographing in Colorado. What looks so perfect to your eye can be so flat and undirected in a picture. How do you build depth into a two dimentional photograph? How do you create a real sense of space and size? How do you approach a genre that has been so definitively and beautifully photographed by Eadweard Muybridge, Ansel Adams and many others. Like the cityscapes of Los Angeles, I try to look at everything as a portrait, not to be recorded, but to be interpreted. My greatest inspiration as a photographer is often painters. In this recent work the English artist John Constable is always in my mind, with his powerful presence of clouds and skies.

Professional photographer Jim McHugh will be leading a series of "Creativity Classes" at the Polaroid booth, presenting the many ways he expresses his creativity through photography and what Polaroid means to him as an artist.

Jim McHugh, famous for his highly collectible large format Polaroid prints of Los Angeles, will share his experiences over the past 30 years photographing everything from celebrities to architecture. The photographer's work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, The National Portrait Gallery, London, The George Eastman House and the Walker Art Center amongst others. He is the recipient of the coveted Prix de la Photographie, Paris for Architecture.

Forret Fine Art in Aspen is installing 12 pieces for the Holiday Season which will be up by Thanksgiving Weekend. I will be posting more about that show in December, but several prints are 2 and 3 panels on aluminum that are unique works.

Rob and Sheryl at home in Santa Barbara with the Blue Pacific behind them. On the adjoining portico they confer with the celebrated interior designer, and good friend, David Phoenix.

I always enjoy working with Sheryl and Rob Lowe. They know exactly what it takes to make great photographs and will always set aside enough time to let that happen.
To Rob no detail is too small; he and Sheryl completely understand the
importance of style, lighting
and all the other tiny details that go into making pictures look so simple and easy! Of course,we also appreciated the little Italian cookies and imported prosciutto!
Photographers are so easily won over!

My lens cap's off to Jennifer Dynof, who schedules and manages the vast Lowe Universe, she patiently put this all together. FYI photo travelers, Jennifer is the highly experienced former production manager for my friend and unforgettable photographer Herb Ritts.

We were most fortunate to have interior designer David Phoenix http://www.davidphoenix.com/david-phoenix/ lending his expert hand on the shoot day. David has skillfully decorated homes for everybody from the Kennedys to Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife Maria Shriver. David was recognized last year in the design world as "America's Leading Young Designer." So if David Phoenix says " I think the chair needs to go a little bit to left," well then... that's where we put it !!

named Scottie, so I'm just a little partial.
Of course with shepherds you have to be
very open minded about some serious barking!

What exceptional couple, my crew and I enjoyed spending the afternoon with Jim and Jennifer. They were so considerate of both us and the job we had to do. Jim's schedule is always jam packed, finding a afternoon to shoot was challenging. His TV series films every day - and music bookings often take him away on the weekends. We had plenty of time to set up our shots and they happily offered help and good suggestions. Jim was only concerned with "getting it right." Working with this caliber of artist will always makes for successful pictures. And, of course, there was lunch! I must also thank Jim's extremely capable assistant Samandhi, a USC Film School graduate for her very appreciated schedule juggling that allowed all the planes
to land in the same place at the same time so our little photo shoot could actually happen!

All of these pictures were shot with my Nikon D3x, I like the native
color of Nikon captures and Nikon Lenes are truly spectacular. The raw files are processed through Adobe Lightroom.

Summer of 2010- Aspen and California's HWY 1

It's been an exciting time this summer photographing and printing a variety of new pictures. While in Colorado for an August exhibit in Aspen I was fortunate to spent several days photographing mountain landscapes with my Speed Graphic and Polaroid. My first challenge was how to approach this subject matter with my camera in a fresh way?

I will forever be moved and influenced by 19th. century pictoralist photography. I can almost feel the photographer at work. Because of the primitive materials and technologies available at the time, photographic results were completely unpredictable. Polaroid is very similar, every image has a slightly different different quality. The pictures of photographer Edweard Muybridge and landscape painter Albert Bierstadt always fascinate me. There is so much emotion in the imagery. Muybridge is often defined by his “motion” studies, but to me his landscapes are the most stunningly. They are dark and powerfully compelling! Bierstadt’s canvases of Yosemite Valley are filled with vision! So much color and imagination. More than most contemporary photography can produce.

With Muybridge and other Pictoralist's work there is such a sense of struggle and triumph in the imagery. Not only must the photographer have the "Eye" to see; but the prints themselves are so precious, difficult to make! They look three dimensional, like charcoal drawings.

By merging older analog systems and digital technologies I am trying to create in my prints a slight confusion, an uncertainty. I hope the viewer’s eye will linger longer on the surface. More like a radio drama than a film; the listener is allowed to supply the unseen. I will be heading back to Colorado this week.

This is a photograph of mine published by Los Angeles Magazine last year. An interesting sidebar - the Ravenswood was actually built by Paramount Pictures to house visiting actors, writers, directors etc. It's well known that Mae West lived there, but apparently Eva Gardiner, Clark Gable and many other celebrities did as well. My wife Johnna and I lived in the Ravenswood in the mid-1980s. The Ravenswood is certainly one of the most familiar and iconic examples of Los Angeles Cinematic Architecture. I keep returning to photograph it. This is another print from my files done a few years ago on Polaroid T-55. MOODisima!

These photographs will be represented at the L.A. Art Show in January by Timothy Yarger Fine Art. All the works chosen will be from "Let's Get Lost." It's exciting going through these Los Angeles pictures. When sometimes I think "That It!" The city will always give up yet another hidden surprise!

Steve Tyrell at the Cafe Carlyle performing his classic CD-" STANDARD TIME" which celebrates it's 10 anniversary. Steve's also marks his 5th year at the Cafe Carlyle for the Holiday engagement! He sang the 3 McHugh songs from the album, "I'm in the Mood for Love," "On The Sunny Side Of The Street" and "I Can't Give You Anything But Love,Baby."

While shooting these pictures I heard some one next to me whisper "I Like your style!" I looked over to see sports photographer Neil Leifer, Tyrell's other great photo buddy!

With me were MC Marden / People Magazine / Time Inc. veteran, as well as sculptor Joel Shapiro and his wife and artist Ellen Phelan. The Music- Art-Photography Night! Joel visited the Louis Armstrong Museum in Queens that afternoon. He knows all the standards by heart!

Jimmy McHugh's grandson, photographer Jim McHugh (Architectural Digest) has a new book and photography Exhibition titled after the iconic standard "Let's Get Lost." The photographs depict a moody, Chandleresque Los Angeles. The works are an homage to his grandfather and Hollywood as the vintage Cinema Capitol. The songwriter and lyricist Dorothy Fields traveled there after the Stock Market Crash of 1929. Many Broadway Theaters were closing and the daring McHugh and Fields set off to Hollywood to try their hands at writing songs for the movies!

It was such a fun photo shoot. Kelsey and Camille always put you at ease with their humor and easygoing personality. They always make you feel so welcome. I shot these last month for the December issue of Architectural Digest. I used the Nikon D3x which I think produces about the best native file color of any camera. Incidentally, no strobe for these, we used the California SunBounce reflector system which you can maneuver very quickly.

Had a really great time seeing Steve Tyrell at the Catalina..'Standard Time' is such a perfect CD for the American Songbook. Steve and Bill Claxton were very best friends, Steve performed at Bill's LA County Museum Memorial. Photography and Music have always been close friends.

Wouldn't you know, my D300 batteries were undercharged and I finished up with a point and shoot!

It's been interesting applying so many photography marketing ideas to a music catalog. My grandfather and I were very close, it seems only right to do all we can to make his music live on.

I'm working on the new pictures from Paris, called " Sketches for Atget." These prints are a group of photographs taken on several walks over a period of three days in Paris. All of the photographs were taken with what remains of my 4x5 Polaroid stock. What a better place than Paris? I've posted these two.

Paris photographer Samuel Lugassy, Designer Kevin Corn and Debbie Hauvette Dir. of the Gallery.

The Installation is in, We took the final framed works from the Dupon Lab today. Samuel Lugasssy and Kevin Corn have been so much help. The pictures are so beautiful in this wonderful French library enviorment. They seem to belong, like a living room. There were quite a few visitors to the Gallery today. The images in the window created real interest. Kevin's
handiwork. And somehow Samuel got eveything up and perfect! Debbie Hauvette from Transacmer has made all of this possible.

L.A. Skies Paris Show

L.A. Skies

I'm really excited about my upcoming show in Paris. I printed the entire show on Innova Fiber paper which feels like it was made for these specific images. I think the quality of the prints is stunning. Holding detail for color and depth in darker imagery has been so important. The prints are being framed now in France, at the Dupont Lab in Paris.

It will be very interesting for me to see how a European audience responds to these very classic noir images of Hollywood and Los Angeles. The photograph of the Asbury is the first picture I've produced using the newer Fuji 4x5 instant film.

I photographed Julius in November of 2008. The camera he is holding is the one he began shooting with in 1936.

His photographs are examples of what the very best can be. Any serious photography involving architecture must be looked at in relationship to the work of Julius Shulman. His way of photographing will never again be duplicated.

A Master of a series of technically demanding skills he was able to capture with a large format camera in a single shot on a sheet of film the perfect picture- meticulously lit and balanced. But above all else it was his vision as an artist that defined an era.

With his passing one senses a great continent has slipped back into the sea.
